butt hole road

The residents of “Butt Hole Road” in Conisbrough (South Yorkshire) have clubbed together to change their street’s rather unfortunate name. Not only were the people tired of the continuous jokes and insults with regard to their address, but the street name caused some severe practical problems as well. Parcel deliveries, for example, never reached the intended recipients, because delivery companies simply refused to believe that a street with a name like this existed….

In addition, the residents had to cope with a ceaseless amount of tourists who wanted to have their picture taken mooning in front of the road sign. After the road sign was published in an American tourist guide, entire bus loads of American tourists came to visit the street.

Eventually the residents decided that enough was enough. They held a collection and had the street name changed into “Archer Way”, a reference to a small castle nearby.

Have any of the readers of this blog encountered any other “unfortunate” street names? Please let me know.
